Where to Eat Malaysian Food: Madam Kwan’s. | Whenever I have friends visiting Malaysia from overseas, one of the things I enjoy most is introducing them to our local food. Malaysian cuisine is incredibly diverse, so I always look for a restaurant where they can experience several familiar Malaysian flavours in one place.

One of my go-to choices is Madam Kwan’s.

Recently, I attended Madam Kwan’s “Two Celebrations, One Milestone” event at The Exchange TRX, and it was a great opportunity to learn more about the story behind this well-loved Malaysian restaurant.

A Taste of Malaysia in One Place

For first-time visitors to Malaysia, choosing what food to try can be overwhelming. We have so many dishes and flavours to discover!

That’s why I like bringing my overseas friends to Madam Kwan’s. The menu offers a variety of Malaysian favourites, making it easy to introduce them to different local flavours without having to visit several restaurants.

From Nasi Lemak and Char Kway Teow to Curry Laksa and the iconic Nasi Bojari, there are plenty of choices. And of course, you can end your meal with a Malaysian favourite like Cendol.

It’s a simple way to give visitors a little taste of Malaysia in one sitting.

Madam Kwan’s Celebrates Two Major Milestones

Madam Kwan’s has been serving Malaysian favourites since 1999 and has grown from a single restaurant into a homegrown brand with 20 outlets nationwide.

The recent celebration marked two important milestones for the brand.

The first is its JAKIM Halal certification. Madam Kwan’s central kitchens and 17 outlets across Peninsular Malaysia have successfully obtained JAKIM Halal certification, with the new AEON Tebrau outlet expected to complete the certification process in due course.

As someone who often recommends Malaysian food to friends from overseas, I think this is particularly reassuring for Muslim travellers. They can enjoy their meal with greater confidence, knowing that the certified outlets follow the required halal standards, including food handling and hygiene practices.

Nasi Bojari Makes Malaysia Book of Records

The second milestone is all about one of Madam Kwan’s most iconic dishes — Nasi Bojari.

The dish has been recognised by the Malaysia Book of Records as the “Most Nasi Bojari Sold In A Year”, with an impressive 245,362 plates sold nationwide.

Created by Madam Kwan Swee Lian herself, Nasi Bojari features fragrant tri-coloured rice served with a deep-fried whole chicken leg, assam prawn, beef rendang and a hard-boiled egg.

For anyone trying Malaysian food for the first time, I think this is such a fun dish to recommend because you get several different flavours and textures on one plate.

And with more than 245,000 plates sold in a year, it’s safe to say this is a dish that Malaysians really love!

Why I Recommend Madam Kwan’s to Visitors

For me, a good travel food recommendation isn’t just about the food. It should also be convenient, comfortable and offer something that represents the local culture.

That’s what makes Madam Kwan’s a good option when I have overseas friends visiting Malaysia.

You get:

  • 🇲🇾 A variety of Malaysian dishes under one roof
  • 🍚 Iconic local favourites including Nasi Lemak and Nasi Bojari
  • ☪️ JAKIM Halal-certified outlets across Peninsular Malaysia
  • 👨‍👩‍👧‍👦 A comfortable dining experience for families and groups
  • 📍 Convenient outlets in popular locations around Malaysia
  • ❤️ A homegrown Malaysian brand with a legacy dating back to 1999

Most importantly, it gives visitors an easy introduction to the flavours Malaysians know and love.

Win Up to RM20,000 at Madam Kwan’s

To celebrate these two milestones, Madam Kwan’s is also launching a three-month dine-in promotion starting September 2026.

Customers who dine at Madam Kwan’s outlets in Peninsular Malaysia can participate for a chance to win prizes worth up to RM20,000 while enjoying their favourite Malaysian dishes.

So if you’re planning to dine at Madam Kwan’s during the promotion period, keep an eye out for the contest details and your chance to take home some exciting prizes.

Bring the Taste of Madam Kwan’s Home

If you love Madam Kwan’s flavours and want to enjoy them at home, the brand also has a range of signature cooking pastes, snacks and instant beverage premixes.

You can find Madam Kwan’s products on Shopee, which makes it convenient to bring a little taste of Malaysian cuisine into your own kitchen.

Whether you’re a Malaysian missing familiar flavours or a visitor who wants to recreate a little piece of your Malaysia food experience at home, it’s definitely worth checking out the Madam Kwan’s range on Shopee.

Final Thoughts

Malaysia is a country where food is part of our identity, and I always believe the best way to introduce someone to Malaysia is through our food.

With its variety of Malaysian favourites, long-standing legacy and JAKIM Halal certification across its certified outlets, Madam Kwan’s is one of the places I would recommend when introducing Malaysian cuisine to friends from overseas.

So, if you’re searching for where to eat Malaysian food, halal Malaysian food or Malaysian restaurants to try in Kuala Lumpur, put Madam Kwan’s on your list.

Come hungry — because there are plenty of Malaysian flavours waiting to be discovered.
